    nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17435353 I'd say this is 'Toy', "...a half-bred Scotch terrier...", who evidently appeared in the J.C. Williamson production 'Balalaika', which ran at the Sydney Theatre Royal from 16/12/1937 thru to 4/3/1938. The other chap might be the musical's director, Frederick Blackman (who, per this SMH item, was evidently impressed by Toy)...or perhaps a member of the cast...or perhaps even a NSW Railways Dept dog handler! American actor Robert Halliday was the male star of 'Balalaika', but it's not him.

    SMH preview item nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17438801
    SMH backstage nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17425066 (includes another pic of Toy wearing the same collar we see above); SMH Backstage nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17444407
    Australian girls as ballet dancers nla.gov.au/nla.news-article52265314
    etc: nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17440764 ;

    According to the first of the SMH backstage articles (link above) Toy left her family of 5 puppies behind in Melbourne in order to be part of the show in Sydney!

    I wonder if she was allowed to take a 'bow' at the end of the show (!)

    I've now realised that the SLNSW has a number of pics of the Balalaika cast...here are a just a few:
