Sawmills have operated in Missouri almost from the beginning of European settlement. In this print, two sawmill workers are using the steam-powered machinery prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One man guides the blade into a log raised on two smaller logs; the other man supervises the machine, which has various sized wheels and a large belt. Black smoke pours out of the pipe of the engine. Several large cut logs in the foreground display the characteristic ring pattern on their cut ends.
