Futurist Theatre Scarborough - old lighting board behind circle box. This behemoth of a board is located in the right hand box at the side of the stage in what was originally an organ chamber. Largely unseen for over forty years, it will probably bring back memories from - ahem - more senior lighting operators!

God, this is a Rank Strand Grand Master. Can't be many still existing in their original building. The Gaumont State Kilburn (now a church) has its original Grand Master I know, but I didn't know there were any others in old cinemas. Peter

This is a Strand Electric Grand Master produced long, long before the '70s when the Rank Organisation bought a stake in the theatre lighting company. There is another at fly level at the Odeon, Leicester Square which latterly was used to control the five, fresnel-lensed pattern 234 lanterns which are suspended above the five circular apertures in the 1968 ceiling just forward of the proscenium and used to illuminate the orchestra pit (either when occupied by a full orchestra, as at former Royal Film Performances, or just with the centre lantern "plugged in" to illuminate the organ and organist from above). Those lights have also been used when the pit has been raised as an apron extension to the stage for rare live performances and awards presentations. The Odeon's G.M. originally controlled the footlights, battens, dips and stage-located spots in the days before they were all replaced by 18 "pageant" spotlights housed in the box attached to the front circle wall.
