Wasn't the County across Dalton Square in what is now Palatine Hall?

I think you may be right - but there seems to be a double auditorium at the rear of these (the red doors and the "to Let" buildings), and these both would appear to have been theatre or cinemas. Any clues?

It does look like a cinema/theatre facade of some kind, certainly. The 1931 Kine Year Book lists the Hippodrome and Palace separately but gives no indication of the Hippodrome's address. Incidentally, my old friend Graham Hibbert has been scanning and uploading a wealth of slides depicting 1960s and 1970s Lancaster, including one of the County as a cinema - www.flickr.com/photos/grahamhibbert/6001864403/
