    The Maidstone Granada (bingo) and Cannon (cinemas) in the late 1980's. Opened 1934, designed by Cecil Massey. Converted 1971 to cinema and bingo by George Coles.

      Ah! This one shows the films. It was unusual to put as much detail on the canopy as we did for Born On The Fourth Of July, but I remember we made a big deal of getting a special preview show of that film. That's actually a canopy I didn't do.

      If I remember rightly, back in the 60's the lower part which is the cinema entrance in this picture, housed the Fiesta coffee bar which was the Mods meeting place. The Rockers met not far from here in Contie;s at the bottom of Gabriels hill.

      Not much to tell really. They mostly rode lambretta's, the 200 GT's and SX's were the popular models and a few Vespa's which would be parked in the inshot on the left of this picture. They mainly wore ex US army parkas with fur trimmed hoods. The rockers would also park here and as I recall it was all amicable, I don't remember there being any trouble, like the fights that used to erupt in Margate on bank holidays.
