Western Tanager Eating Lerps

The male Western Tanager is feeding on lerps created by nymphs of the Red Gum Lerp Psyllid, which was first reported in S. California only within recent years, showing up in L.A. in 1998. The Western Tanager has learned to utilize this new source of food, as have other birds. The lerps are tiny, but birds seem to love 'em!
