Wade & Squire Families 1925-1940
This lovely photograph album was compiled by Frank Girling Squire of Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex. He lived there with his wife Elsie Lillian Squire (nee Wade) at a house called ‘Elsgarth’ in Southbourne Gardens. The album includes photographs of their wedding day at Farsley Parish Church (between Leeds and Bradford) in West Yorkshire in 1927, joined by their parents Dr & Mrs F H Squire of Glenera, Pudsey and Caleb and Lillian Wade of Westfield, Stanningley. There are many photos of their child ‘Derry’ (Derek) as he grows up, learns to ride a bike, plays with toys in the garden and swims in the sea. There are wedding photos of other relatives too (Mr Hyland & Miss Wade at Farsley Parish Church, West Yorkshire in 1930 and Mr Wade & Miss Bennett at Pudsey, West Yorkshire in 1928).

There are photos of trips and family holidays in Paignton, Plymouth, Salcombe and Brixham Harbour in Devon; Frinton-on-Sea, Canvey Island and Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex; Trafalgar Square in London; Sandown and Seaview on the Isle of Wight (with a nice view of the Ocean Hotel in Sandown 1927); Pakefield, Kirkley, Oulton Broad and Lowestoft in Suffolk; Bottesford in Nottinghamshire (at the stocks); and Gorleston in Norfolk. There is a particularly nice photo of Dr Squire looking across the harbour at Lowestoft and one showing the fishing boats alongside at Lowestoft, both taken in 1929.

There are photos of Thorington Hall and Church in Suffolk 1934, yachts at Burnham-on-Crouch (Essex) in 1929, a group photo of the ‘Banks Tennis Club’ 1934, four photos of the Southend Carnival 1934 (including a troop of majorettes and a band), Frank Squire with a group in Jersey 1925, and a photo of Caleb & Lillian Wade at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset in 1940.

There are photos of trips to Scotland, including Tillicoultry in Clackmannanshire, Loch Earn, the falls and river at Leny, a nice image of the Moffat House Hotel in Dumfriesshire in 1928, St Fillans in Perthshire and Aberdeen. There is a photo of the ‘marriage room’ at Gretna Green in 1928 with a sign that reads: ‘Over 10,000 marriages performed in this Marriage Room est 1830’.
