Follow The Leader (Re-edit)
I am preparing for the 2012 ALMS Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park which takes place July 6-7. This is by far my favorite shoot of the year. For the week leading up to my trip I am going to post a picture a day from last year's race weekend. These images will either be never before posted to flickr or some that I have since re-edited. Enjoy!
The countdown is at 4 days.
The close racing action of the American Le Mans Series combined with the tight quarters of Lime Rock Park can lead to a lot of excitement. Just ask the drivers of all three of the cars in the shot. All three of them were involved in a chain reaction accident in West Bend early in the race when an LMPC car got together with one of the Extreme Speed Ferraris directly ahead of this battle. All three cars (running 3--4-5 at the time) needed extensive repairs and lost a ton of time, but both teams did a fantastic job getting them all back out on track to finish the race.
So far the main story of 2012 in the GT category has been the epic battles between BMW Team RLL and Corvette Racing. In fact, every race so far has featured at least one Corvette and one BMW on the podium.
BMW Team RLL struck first at Sebring with the #56 BMW M3 GT scoring the class victory with Joey Hand, Dirk Muller and Jonathan Summerton sharing the driving duties. Since then, however, the #4 Corvette driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin has taken the top step of the podium at each of the last two races, including a Corvette 1-2 at the most recent race at Laguna Seca.
As a side note, both teams have drivers marking career milestones at the Northeast Grand Prix. Jan Magnussen of Corvette Racing and Bill Auberlen of BMW Team RLL will both mark their 100th American Le Mans Series races.
