Costa Rica: Thicket Antpitta!
I am convinced that an Antpitta's sole rationale for being is to frustrate birders and not be seen. And even among the Antpittas, this species is notorious. Not uncommon in its range - moist lowland and foothill forests from Honduras to W. Colombia, but it is hardly seen, let alone photographed (I can't find any pics on the web for example). So imagine my thrill when I got this on the forest trail at Arenal Lodge. I had heard at least 4 individuals along the trail and even managed a quick glimpse of one and thus was already on a high. Then this one called close to the trail, I spotted a patch of open ground under a palm, waited, and the bird walked right in there. Got off some shots at 1/30sec shutter speed and this was the only one that was usable. Woo-hoo!! My most treasured shot from the trip. Dec 28th, 2010.
