Steel Cross Frame
These images walk through much of the process of creating a new steel cross frame set. Because this will be my bike, it appears a bit odd in profile. I ride a 54 X 58 frame because of my chimp like proportions.

We are incorporating a few features into this frame which are pretty rare. In an effort to create a "clean" cross frame, the derailleurs and rear brake cables are run internally in the top tube. I considered (briefly) running the rear cable housing inside the seat stay as well, but bagged the idea when I realized that it would look worse that way than running it under the seat stay.

What you might pick up on is that all the cables run fully enclosed and protected right from the control levers to their practical terminus. No exposed cables to pick up mud and grit. No cables on the top tube or down tube to get in the way. All internal runs are stainless and completely sealed. Yup, a PITA, but if we're going to build your cross frame, we want to make it as easy to live with as we can.

10/13/11 - Frame is now in one piece. Jeff is tickled pink with how it is turning out. Clearly, I don't deserve it.

10/18/11 - Seat stays are now created, slotted, seat lug mitered, stays soldered / brazed on, cleaned up. Little fittings created from scratch and installed. Those little cable housing tunnels are hand made from very thin stainless strip to look a bit like the old Campy top tube cable clips. The frame is close now.

10/27/11 - Frame's been done for a while now. Jeff will be done the fork tomorrow, maybe.

12/07/11 - Long time in finishing ... after all, I am not a paying customer. I gave it a fall theme. Fun, but somewhat difficult. If I had been a paying customer, I would have charged myself a lot for the air brush work. The clear coat is a somewhat matte finish except for the one leaf which sits over the end of the down tube panel.

All done and after a bit of riding in the area, it is now off to a a testing session by an Expert cross racer.
