Last Light at La Grande

Last month (July 2012), I paid my first, and definitely not last, visit to the Blue Mountains of Oregon to experience Union Pacific's crossing of this unique and historic mountain range.

La Grande was a great home base for this trek. Its a true railroad town. The beautiful passenger station is home to many facets of UP operation, from MoW to Crew Ops. Crews from La Grande run trains west to Hinkle Yard and east to Huntington, OR. Trains interchange traffic with the Idaho, Northern and Pacific RR. A flanger and Jordan Spreader sit in the yard, ready for whatever Winter delivers to the Blues.

Here, a train from Hinkle switches out a set of cars for the Idaho, Northern and Pacific. The setting Summer sun in La Grande is very intriguing to the camera. Its a game of constantly changing light and shadow here. It really paid off!
