The ladies loved nothing more than a good gossip around the office watercooler
Free-range chickens having a drink and a gossip
The 17th of June saw the yearly Open Farm Sunday event where farms across the UK open their gates and welcome in the public to get a better idea of where their food comes from.
We headed over to Swillington Organic Farm - it's only about 10 minutes drive from our house, and having visited last year we knew it would be a nice afternoon out - it's a great little co-operative that has organic growing and animal welfare at it's heart - it's lovely to see animals being well looked after - the saddleback pigs looked very happy in their big open fields (especially the cute piglets bouncing around without a care in the world), and the chickens are free to roam - theres really nothing stopping them walking off the farm except they seem to rather like their hen houses.
This year their butcher was onsite demonstrating preparing cuts of meat and answering questions, and there was a wood-working demonstration (part of a new scheme where teenagers can learn old-fashion skills and help repair some of the walled garden).
There was also a tasty BBQ staffed by leeds restaurant and caterers Create - the farms own Chicken&Bacon burgers were exceptionally tasty - we picked up a pack from the farmshop before we left (along with some nice looking sausages and pork chops).
The farm shop is open fridays and saturdays (and they also offer a delivered meat-box scheme) - so if you live in Leeds why not pop in and support them (they also sell at a number of local farmers markets too)
