Gawthorpe World Coal-Carrying Championships

Photos from the 2011 World Coal-Carrying championships in Gawthorpe, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Each year, locals and occasionally contestants from around the world come to compete in a challenge of endurance - carrying a sack of coal for 1 mile (and a gradually up-hill mile at that). The record is just a shade over 4 minutes - some of the contestants really go for it, but not everyone manages to make it to the end.
