Lady Gaga @ The O2 Arena
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta aka Lady Gaga played the first of three artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball shows at East London’s O2 Arena in support of her 4th studio album Artpop. The New Yorker played a 26-song set stretching to two hours and hitting the venue’s curfew of 11pm as she stormed through a set primarily featuring songs from Artpop as well as a selection of previous hits including Just Dance, Poker Face and Bad Romance.
The alternative pop starlet made a point of singing and playing piano live throughout the set, stopping for brief moments to change outfit, pause or address her adoring Little Monsters. Ahead of playing Born This Way the 28-year-old read out a letter a fan named Sarah who suffers from bipolar disorder had written to her, describing how Gaga’s music had helped her through a tough time in her life. As she dedicated the song to Sarah, she invited her up on stage to sit with her at the piano as she sang it.
While there were such somber moments to reflect of the struggles of the alternatives, those suffering from mental illness and her adoring gay fan base, these were balanced with plenty of colour pop and light.
An interesting foray into the world of live pop music for sure, artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball was certainly a spectacle to behold.
