USS Arizona Gun Barrel begins trek to Arizona Capitol Museum after more than 63 years at Virginia Naval Base
DAHLGREN, Va., (April 10, 2012) - Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett
(left) joins Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)
Commander Capt. Michael Smith (right) and NSWCDD Operations Department Head
Pete Kolakowski to watch the last USS Arizona 14-inch gun barrel begin its
move from NSWCDD in Dahlgren, Va., to Arizona April 10.
The gun barrel, removed from the ship to be relined, was at the Dahlgren
Naval Proving Ground in Virginia for proof testing when the attack on Pearl
Harbor occurred on Dec. 7, 1941. The state of Arizona is also moving a USS
Missouri gun barrel from Norfolk Naval Shipyard's St. Julien's Creek Annex
to exhibit with the Arizona gun. These two barrels, representing "bookends"
of World War II - the beginning and end - will significantly enhance the USS
Arizona memorial exhibit at the Arizona Capitol Museum in Phoenix. (U.S.
