The Ramp Gallery: Moments, XX’s Collection
"Chasing" by Artist Yelena Sophia
August 22–August 31, 2012
Yelena Sophia’s candid photographs evoke a sense of stillness and camaraderie with the viewer. In Moments, the candid represents the instant when Sophia’s subject finds a moment alone, despite the presence of others.
Sophia states, “Candids, the unplanned moments, are meant to remind us of the surprises life has to offer. Catching one is much like catching a butterfly in a net–so many are beautiful, but the rare one that sticks around long enough to get trapped is the one that is remembered.”
Though her photographs often exhibit scenes of the banal rituals of life, each reveals a frank intimacy as the subjects let down their guards. This frankness, a precious gift to the photographer, is captured in the split second of the shutter.
Yelena Sophia is a Russian-American photographer and artist based out of Oakland, California. For more information about Sophia’s work, please visit www.yelenasophia.com.
