Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914), "Night with Her Train of Stars"

The picture takes its title from W E Henley's poem 'I M Margaritae Sorori', no 35 in his Echoes, 1872-89:

Night with her train of stars

And her great gift of sleep.

It was given to Birmingham in 1915 by the E R Hughes Memorial Committee and is possibly the artist's masterpiece, although the blue tonality and soft sfumato, achieved by an elaborate process of stippling, are very characteristic.
