69°S 40°E, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica: In the southmost continent on Earth, scientists of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition embark every year on a three-week journey from the coast of Antarctica to the Antarctic plateau. Aboard snow vehicles, they must find their way through an endless expanse of ice, braving violent blizzards and deep crevasses. The final destination, Dome Fuji station, rises to 3700 m and sees temperatures between -30 and -80 °C.
