Félicien Rops, 1833-1898
Belgian artist, born in Namur, Félicien Rops first won fame as a caricaturist. After the failure of his marriage, he moved to Paris, where he met Charles Baudelaire, poet, who profoundly influenced his artistic work. Therefore his work remains closely associated with the movements of Symbolism and Decadence. In his often impious and shocking art, he mingles sex, death and Satanism and depicts an imaginary world of social decadence.
