South Hills Mall - Poughkeepsie, NY
This mall opened in 1976 with Sears, Hess's, and Kmart. The mall started to struggle when the Poughkeepsie Galleria opened up right next door in 1987. Sears moved out in 1991 and was split between Price Chopper, Media Play, and Pharmhouse(owned by Phar-Mor). Hess's closed and was replaced with Burlington Coat Factory. The mall's owner at the time tried to curtail the mall's struggles by luring in big box retailers such as Office Max, Bob's Stores, and Old Navy to the mix. This all proved futile, and the mid 2000's brought and end to the mall's success. The mall was demolished in 2009, except for the mall's theater, Price Chopper(ShopRite by this point), Kmart, and Burlington Coat Factory. Now dubbed The Shoppes at South Hills, the new center has brought in Bob's Discount Furniture, Ashley Furniture, Hobby Lobby, and The Christmas Tree Shops.
