Had pretty much given up on this morning's foray, when I noticed a red admiral settle on a wet tree trunk. Got the gear out. It flew off. As I was ready to pack up, noiselessly this lovely buck appeared. I could not move, but by pure good fortune was not in too bad a position. He clearly heard the shutter as he twitched each time, but did not move off until I emerged from behind the viewfinder.
Despite the closeness, this is a true wild deer, and my privilege and luck to see him.
