Sebring 1980 - The era of big flares

    Newer Older

The 1980's were the era of big hair for women and big flares and wings for race cars. In my opinion neither of those fads were attractive. This BMW March M1 was driven by Jim Busby, Rick Knoop and Bruce Jenner (before the face lifts). It failed to finish due to the gearbox.

This car ran with a BMW in-line 6 at Daytona but showed up at Sebring with a small block Chevy V-8. The V-8 was more than the gearbox could handle.

Weren't these rather inelegant racers just the result of rules that permitted wide wheelbases and huge tires coupled with a requirement that the tires not... stick out? I agree the look is unfortunate. I guess we can take consolation that perhaps with what they learned about airflow management around the sides of cars, it may have helped end the era of slab-sided prototypes... I always felt the slab sided prototypes were chunky looking.

Frank Lloyd Wrong???.....That is just as bad as Nigel Smuckatelli. Obviously we both have a sense of humor.
