Steve McQueen Sebring 1970

    Prev Next

Steve is talking to a journalist when I took the photo. I was a race worker at the 1970 Sebring race and had access to the pits. Out of courtesy to him I pointed to my camera and asked him if I could take his photo. All he said was, OK, but don't ask me to pose.

What finally got him was mesotheleoma. Either exposure to asbestos while in the military or exposure to brake shoe dust from long years of working on cars. In the old days the brake shoes were made of asbestos. When I was a kid I used to see mechanics use compressed air to blow out the dust from brake drums.

McQueen actually got it while he was a laborer in a ship yard, plus the exposure you mentioned. I envy that you got to meet him, nice photo...

Le journaliste a coté de Steve MCQUEEN est Bernard CAHIER

      bubuch1969:

I sent the McQueen photo to the Bernard Cahier Archives site and his son, Paul-Henri Cahier, said it is not his father.

Thank you for your attempt to solve a 39-year-old mystery.
