a visitor! a friend!

I still screamed and jumped back.

Broccoli Parmesan Fritters on

When we were part of a CSA a few years ago, the corn nearly always had "friends" too - the first few weeks, I screamed at the discovery of every one of them. I got pretty good at removing them all before the corn came inside, but one week, one eluded me, and managed to make its way all the way into the living room.

When I was in grade school my mom would have me cut up the vegetables for dinner, and one day while doing the broccoli, I grabbed a bright green chunk of what I thought was stem and readied the knife to slice through it... and it squirmed under my fingers! It was one of those worm things, gigantically fat. It was so traumatic, I haven't cut up a head of broccoli or cauliflower for my own meal since then -- I worked in a university dining hall for years, and had to do it then, but I was wearing gloves and didn't have to eat it! I know fresh is best, and it's cheaper to cut it yourself, but now I'll only buy frozen, or the stuff that's already cut up.

Similarly, I won't buy bunches of grapes unless my husband or mother agree to pick them off of the stem and clean them for me, because I've found enough spiders in grapes to last me a lifetime. I'm also reluctant to buy or even eat corn on the cob, because as a child I once found an insect inside one of the kernels.

I'm not one that's horribly afraid of insects, it's just that when it comes to insects and food... YUCK.
