      i've heard that spices should be used within 6 months or else discarded. do you follow this rule?

      No. Not at all. If a spice smells off or has changed color, I'd chuck it. I would not use an arbitrary rule to determine kitchen purchases. (I think some big newspaper article advised this years ago and it had always stuck in my craw.)

      I just used a spice that I am pretty sure was 10 years old. People who say you need to replace them every 6 months are probably selling them.

      These are such pretty jars. You reminded me to post pics of my recent spice cupboard overhaul. I went from using those chubby little wide mouth mason jars, which I would stack on top of each other in the cupboard (invariably resulting in one dropping on my toe upon opening the cupboard), to this, which I LOVE, for its' 'out of sight, out of mind' quality, and also, the preservation of precious shelf space.
