Meoto-iwa (Wedded Rocks)

    Newer Older

A big tourist attraction near Ise jingu, are these two rocks connected by a rope.

The two rocks are considered to be male and female, named Izanagi and Izanami, and represent the first couple in Japanese traditional history.

The sacred rope, called shimenawa is made from rice stalks braided together, and weigh almost a tonne.

Wow, How tall is that Arch on the left rock?

Hey S.D. The arch is actually quite small. I know there's nothing to compare the size with, but I would have to guess the height of the arch is probably no more than about 40cm.
