Zzyzx Road along the I-15 in California

Newer Older

In Zzyzx, California

Zzyzx Road is a 4.5 mile / 7.2 km long, part paved and part dirt, rural collector road in the Mojave Desert. It runs from Interstate 15 generally south to the Zzyzx settlement.

The name Zzyzx, pronounced /ˈzaɪˌzɪks/ (pronounced as "Zie-zix" with the accent on the first syllable, rhyming with "Isaac's", not "physics"), was given to the area in 1944 by Curtis Howe Springer, claiming it to be the last word in the English language. Springer made up the word's pronunciation. He established the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa at the spot, which was federal land that he had no permission to use. He used Zzyzx until 1974, when he was arrested by the United States Marshals for misuse of the land as well as alleged violations of food and drug laws, and the land was confiscated by the government.

i didn't realize it until it was almost posted, but i wrote the same thing eileen wrote... and in your defense, i don't get out much, so when i see signs from other places, it's a blast!!! we don't have anything interesting like that around here... unless we do and i've just gotten bored with it... : )

Excellent! Something about this makes me wonder if people often fall asleep on the road though (must be all those Z's!) =)

You did a great job with this picture. I like how you captured the environment around it. Somehow I remember seeing just brown...

ssilbermanlaw: Thank you. This is one of my favorite street signs. As for the landscape being greener, this shot was taken in late November - after a few rainstorms.

Mark: It's a cool sign. One of these times, I want to take a drive down the road and check out the abandoned hot springs resort.
