The fortress of Bayona in the Spanish nothern coastal provence of Galicia near the border with Portugal. Inside these walls is now a luxury hotel that is just superb.

The town was established in 140 B.C. and has seen many momentous events unfold within its history.

When Columbus returned from his voyage to discover the new world he first returned to Bayona thus they were the first to hear of the discovery of America.

Francis Drake attempted to take the town in 1585 but failed.

The fortress was vital in the defeat of pirates by Philip ll who were laying waste to the coastal regions of northern Spain in 1590. Philip destroyed the Pirates using 98 ships of the Spanish Armada and 17 000 troops.
