The Bee Dance - Die Bienentanz-Skulptur, Hohen Neuendorf bei Berlin.

There is a bee research institute in the town, das Länderinstitut für Bienenkunde (whose director is appropriately Kaspar Bienefeld)

Hohen Neuendorf e.V. hence the subject for the sculpture outside the commuter S-Bahn station.

The institute is housed in a beatiful building but photography is impossible due to a dense grove of trees in front of it. There is an open day this coming weekend (end August 2010) Artists Christine Gersch and Igor Jerschov.

The Bienentanz-Skulptur was unveiled on 23 June 2009 and is 2.5 m high, weights 2.5 tons and is made of brass, steel and thousands of tiny mosaic pieces.

Thanks, David - it comes as quite a surprise and I love it too. I had to ask about its significance, and have added some detail. Without bees, we are all in trouble, and I guess their local institute is trying to breed disease resistance strains of honey bee, a very pressing problem right now.

Die Bienchen gefallen mir nicht so sehr.. Tanzen? Was dachtest du denn Picadilly?

It isn't the waggle dance - you can do that yourself horizontally (if you are a bee)!
  • Krzysztof D. 5y

    Oh yes :D
