The Cretaquarium Thalassocosmos building complex is located half way along the Heraklion prefecture section of the Crete North Coast Road, in the bounds of the former American Base at Gournes, Heraklion. The national road links us to all the major destinations in the area, which is the most heavily developed tourist region on Crete. Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport and Heraklion city are 14 km to the West, the Municipalities of Hersonissos and Malia are 12 and 14 km East and the archaeological site at Knossos lies 20 km to the Southwest.
Thalassocosmos extends over 6 hectares in the western shoreward section of the former American Base at Gournes. This includes the facilities serving the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Crete) facilities and Cretaquarium. The aquarium building lies about 100m from a long sandy bathing beach.
