the red mist descends
By being here teaching English, in a way, I'm helping to build your future. You probably haven't heard of this city of 3 million yet, but you will, if everything goes to plan. They aren't my plans. Dalian is China's IT powerhouse, and a new software park is being built, in addition to the ones already here, that will provide work for almost 50,000 people, not including service staff. Computing is looking more and more the likely bet to be the field the Chinese have real natural talent at, as opposed to just having the numbers. The government is pouring money into it in a way that only Chinese governments can and as the industry develops globally, so will the city. And going global is very much the plan, if Lenovo's recent bid and subsequent consumption of IBM is anything to go by. The city's ambitions match this, with a 350 metre tall world trade centre currently under construction. In fact, despite not even being the provincial capital, Dalian already has the tallest skyline north of Shanghai. And height means everything, especially if you're a computer nerd.
