TRADE WINDS: Guangzhou's African Community

An African-run hairdressing salon operates in the basement, surrounded by Chinese-run businesses, in this location mostly catering to the huge turnover of Africans who come to Guangzhou short-term, living in the many nearby hotels.

Xiaobei, Guangzhou, October 2008

The full project can be viewed as an e-book on my website here

The documentary has also been published as a five-page photo essay in the Guangzhou newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily 南方都城日, available online here, in Chinese. epaper.nddaily.com/C/html/2009-05/23/node_929.htm

Also been told that the photojournalism course I studied last year are being given a whole room to themselves this year at Pingyao 2009, China's longest running and best known photo festival. This project is one of several that will be exhibited, so I've been busy reprocessing all my images for better printing. Anyone planning to go to Pingyao this year, make sure and check out "PhotoMA" room, probably in the "cotton factory" exhibition area.
