Heyward Shepherd monument

Heyward Shepherd was a free African-American who worked as a baggage handler for the B&O Railroad. He was the first casualty at Harpers Ferry, killed by John Brown's provisional army when he tried to get away to sound a warning. The UDC and SCV have seized on him as an example of a "faithful Negro".
