First LCLS-II Cold Box Installed at SLAC
The first of four "cold boxes" for the LCLS-II upgrade to SLAC's X-ray laser has arrived at the lab after traveling by truck from Columbus, Ohio, where it was fabricated. It was then lifted and put into place behind the LCLS-II cryogenic plant. The cold boxes, designed by Jefferson Lab, are key components of the cryoplant facility, which provides the liquid helium coolant to allow the LCLS-II accelerator to operate at just 2 degrees above absolute zero, colder than the far reaches of outer space.
