Hypothetical Oil Spill - Virginia NW (9/3/09 version)

    Prev Next

Montara-sized area of oil slick and sheen overlain along the Atlantic coast off Virginia, showing potential impact of a comparable spill from a source located 55 miles east-southeast of Chincoteague in the proposed Lease Area 220 (shown in yellow). Slick extent is based on analysis of September 3, 2009 NASA / MODIS satellite image of Timor Sea blowout and spill. This illustration assumes wind and current would push the slick to the northwest.
