Apache Leap - Superior, Arizona

Resolution Copper Mining proposes a large underground mine that will cause subsidence of the plateau just east of the escarpment. Mining will impact parts of a National Recreation Area within Tonto National Forest, including the popular Oak Flat campground, so the mining company is offering to swap some land they own elsewhere in return for National Forest land over the mining site. Environmental groups, recreation organizations, and the San Carlos Apache Tribe don't think this is a good deal, or a good precedent. Arizona's Senator John McCain disagrees, and is holding up the nominations of Obama administration appointees to force the government's approval of the land swap, despite allegations of corruption swirling around the deal.
