    * Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet

    This guy, who I found sitting by the roadside on my way to the mountains in Northern India last June, made a great subject, or so I thought. However, since then, he has offered me huge challenges in getting the best out of his portrait. He was just sitting on his haunches with an inscrutable expression, almost motionless. He was wearing a yellow turban wrapped round his head and the mop of grey hair which could be seen crudely cut told that he was not a Sikh as appeared at first glance. The t-shirt showed he wasn't a holy man who would be nearly naked or wearing long robes. The colours of the t shirt, yellow and saffron, hinted he had probably got it from a devotee.

    His face was so dark that it was impossible to see it clearly without cranking up the exposure or brightness. The contrast between his face and his clothes and hair, somehow did not seem to come out right in the original image. Finally I converted it to black and white and turned his turban dark til it looked black and it has been one of my better portraits on Flickr for a while. I had also in that image (see below) cropped the image close to cut off the nondescript background and the mis-fit of a t-shirt. Today, with no new outdoor photography yet in sight for sometime, I decided to have another look at him and this is the result . . .
