Westover Episcopal Church - Charles City, Virginia

Westover Episcopal Church was established early in 1613 with the existing church structure completed circa 1730. The church was unused in the years 1803 to 1833 and in the Civil War Union troops occupied and heavily damaged the interior. The building was restored in 1867 and has been in use as a church since. Three U.S. presidents worshiped here (William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, and John Tyler). The church is about five miles west of Charles City on Virginia Route 5 (called the oldest highway in the United States) between Richmond and Williamsburg. Several old James River plantations are also situated along the highway. Westover Church history

This stop at Westover Church was part of a visit with my flickr contact John H. Bowman and his wife Ruth Ann in April, 2012.
