1969 Buick Sport Wagon

This was our family car soon after my Dad bought it in the mid-1970s, maybe around 1976. It was a gorgeous car, and it was the one I in which I eventually learned to drive.

I called it the Spaceship.

For some reason I was long under the impression the Spaceship had a monster 455 cubic inch engine, but in fact they only came with a 350 or 400, and the latter were reserved for the GS models. In any case, it seemed to have plenty of power.

We probably got it cheap, as big V8 cars were out of fashion in the 1970s. Since my father had a company car, and my mother had a relatively short commute to work, my parents probably weren't really concerned with the cost of operating the car.

For a while, until I got my own car, I drove the Spaceship to school.

My folks sold it in the early 1980s because, as was common with these cars (as well as the Oldsmobile Vista Cruisers), the roof windows eventually leaked.
