Old town of Quito.

    Newer Older

It´s roots in the tribe of Quitus, who lived here before the arrival of the Incas and before the Spanish conquistadors established San Francisco de Quito in 1534 with only 204 settlers.
Long before it was declared with Krakow as one of the first World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1978.
With it´s location on a long plateau lying on the east flanks of the Pichincha volcano, it is a city which is 80 kilometers long and only 5 kilometers wide and with 2800m above sea level, the highest capital of the world. And being the capital of Ecuador (translates to equator) it is also the closest capital city to the equator.
So many stories have been lived here, so much seen, talked about, unseen and forgotten, so much ongoing there today, each moment.
And since 1976 there is a 45m tall monument of a madonna standing on the top of Panecillo, watching over the old historic center of Quito. You can see it left in the picture.
