Meteor vapour trail, 15th Feb 2013 - higher detail
An image from the SEVIRI instrument aboard Meteosat Second Generation. The vapour trail left by the meteor that was seen near Chelyabinsk on 15th February 2013 is visible in the centre of the image. This image is from Meteosat-9, allowing for more detail to be seen than in previous images of the meteor trail. The data used here is Level 1.0, meaning that a wider field-of-view is possible - giving a view of the atmospheric limb as well as the Earth.
This image uses data from the High Resolution Visible (HRV) channel of SEVIRI that can produce images with both high spatial and temporal resolution. The data were received and processed by the Earth Observation Group at the University of Copenhagen. Please email questions or comments to Simon Proud
