Sandy Beach Barrel
Hello everyone, I've been gone for the last three weeks with a bachelor party, weddings and 8 days in Hawaii so I have not really had time to do much, let alone hop on the computer. This last week in Hawaii I finally had a chance to pick up the camera and start shooting again. My wife and I spent a week in Oahu and had a chance to do some exploring and catching up with some friends when time permitted. This shot is of the famous shore break at Sandy Beach on the south shore of Oahu which gets hammered in the summer by the south swell. I can still remember the first time I went to Hawaii back in 94 with friends for three weeks and we would hit Sandy's nearly every day for a quick pounding and the occasional perfect tube ride. The beach is very steep and the swells hit like walls of water and just pitch, which makes for a perfect body surfing wave very steep and hollow. This is definitely not the place to go if you aren't a strong swimmer and expect to take a few nasty beatings until you get the hang of these waves. These walls of water break in a foot or two of water right on to the sand and if you get caught on the outside of the wave you get slammed down into the sand and rolled up onto the beach and to add insult to injury the locals will give you a standing O if you really take a nasty digger. On this day I mainly took shots, but did try my luck, not very successfully, on a couple of waves for old times sake, but I must say it's a lot tougher getting pounded in your thirties than when I was in my early twenties... in fact my big toe is still a bit sore... go figure.
Anyway, I will be checking in with you guys as I can and I can't wait to see what everyone has been up to. Thanks as always for taking the time to stop by and visit.
