Ayers Rock Road 1964

With camera POV on "the rock" you can see the road in '64 was 2 grader strikes wide of corrugations and bull dust all the way (400 odd ks) to Alice Springs.

There was no commercial accommodation, a rough camp ground with long drop toilets and an open pit rubbish dump was for visitors.

There was no permanent population of aboriginal people and nearest store was the very basic Curtin Springs about 80ks away.

One or two buses a week - YES might visit.

How do I know? I was a NT Patrol Officer at this time.

I was busy making 8mm movies, luckily June took some slides.

Ayers Rock/Uluru is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Australia.

Copied from 1964 Kodachrome slide. (See setup in my photo stream)
