Leave No Stone Unturned...

Buff Weka (Gallirallus australis hectori) at Willowbank Reserve.

Lighter in colour than the other weka sub-species, Buff Weka are now found in the wild only on the Chatham Islands. They originally existed on the eastern coast of the South Island but were found to be extinct on the mainland by 1940, however efforts are underway to attempt to repopulate the area. Willowbank have set up a breeding colony in Christchurch where this photo was taken.
