High summer at the allotment

A sunny day in mid-August. Lunch in the shade with Winnie, her son Dennis and my grandson, Oliver. This is now the sixth year since I took over Plot 14 on the Victoria Jubilee Allotments, Handsworth, Birmingham. The plot sits next to the southern fence of Handsworth Park near its railway bridge. There's a trellis extending from the veranda of the shed from which hangs a hardy black vine fecund with grapes. Just beyond the shed there's a hive of Buckfast bees, so far doing well, busy about their work. This is the first season of the greenhouse - bought second hand last November - put up by Winnie and I in February, a site for plants like tomatoes, aubergines and squash and for bringing on seedlings from the packet. For all the things that have been achieved, I feel in many ways less knowledgeable than I was in earlier years.
