Feathery Friday Candidate: The Killdeer
No, she does not "kill deer". A member of the Plover group, she has the unique ability to perform a broken wing act in order to protect her clutch of eggs or young chicks. I saw this one on the golf course, sitting on a bed of sea shells, acting very agitated, thrashing around and faking a broken wing so convincingly we all thought she was injured. In this photo she had calmed down some, but still looked very alert. This shell bed was around a small tree right next to a busy golf parth -a very unlikely nesting place. I imagine this kept her quite busy. Unfortunately, my camera was not ready when she put on her act and she was not about to repeat it!
