The story of an opportunity missed - to poachers!
The Grey-headed Fish Eagle was the greatest attraction for me at Doddamakkali. I would admire it fly and sit on the topmost branches of the tallest tree.
And then, it caught a fish and perched itself on this very approachable rock. The opportunity beckoned and I made my way through water, rocks and sand to try and get as close as possible for a good photograph - one that would make my trip.
As is my habit. I click every minute to ensure that I get the closest possible shot. As I took this one from about 100m away, a huge "BOOM" ringed through the air,. The eagle dropped its fish and made off. I was dumbstruck for a couple of minutes! As I regained my senses, I noticed some activity on the opposite bank. Poachers! They were using dynamite to stun fish in the river. I've never cursed anyone more that that.
I was left wondering - Whose loss was greater, mine or the eagle's?
