Yellowstone Falls detail

In this closeup, shot from the north rim instead of the further-downstream Artist's Point, you can see how the waterfall and the canyon were formed - the harder igneous rock (black, on the left and upstream) abruptly gives way to much softer sedimentary rock (yellow, downstream). The sedimentary rock gets eroded faster, leaving an abrupt drop between the two rock zones and a massive canyon downstream.
