We are all waiting...
I posted this while everyone was anticipating the GM bankruptcy filing. (The large building in the background is the current corporate headquarters of General Motors - Formerly known as the Renaissance Center)
The long arc of GM, its people and the UAW is tightly interwoven with the history of the modern United States. The incredible economic engine that was the American Automobile and the culture that sprang from it permeates all aspects of our culture.
Judgments and prejudices aside, today June 1, 2009, the day of the GM bankruptcy announcement, is a pivotal day in American History. Millions of lives will change, and change again as as this new chapter unfolds. Many fear for the livelihoods, health care, housing etc. Dealerships all across the country will close, with the ripple effect of that in smaller communities.
I wonder what my personal hero of the American auto saga, Walter Reuther would say today, and I wonder too, if he were still here, how this situation might be different.
I hope everyone takes a moment or two to examine the history of GM, the industry and the UAW, and all of the lives and experiences that it shaped.
