Accidental Rose Bush

This little rose is one of many that appeared on a bush in my yard. What's so special about that you ask? Well, I'm glad you asked. It wasn't there two and a half years ago when we moved in. The first year I noticed this single spindly stalk and thought it was from the wild root stock that must have lost it's graft one harsh winter. So I did what any small time gardener would do. I lopped it off. The next year it came back with three stocks. Again, I cut them off thinking to myself that I had better dig it out or I'd have this renegade flowerless jumble of stock and thorns. This year it budded out and I have the prettiest deep red roses. The other little thing about this surprise is that if I had not been pruning an overgrown hedge I would not have found it at all. So the moral of the story is:

Prune your ugly bushes so something pretty can have room to grow.

Okay, can use the quote. It' profound, ain't it!?

P.S. The little milk glass vase in the back is a sweet surprise found stuffed on a thrift store shelf. $1.99 ( "
